Policy Alert: Senate Passes RAISE Family Caregivers Act

January 8, 2018, the Senate passed the bipartisan Recognize, Assist, Include, Support, and Engage (RAISE) Family Caregivers Act (S. 1028/H.R. 3759). The RAISE Act was initially passed by the Senate in September of last year, and was then passed by the House of Representatives in December. Now that the Senate has passed the consolidated version of the bill, it will be headed to the President for his signature.

The RAISE Act directs the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to develop, maintain, and periodically update a National Family Caregiving Strategy. The bill also calls on HHS to convene a Family Caregiving Advisory Council to advise it on recognizing and supporting family caregivers. This Council will be comprised of relevant federal agency representatives as well as family caregivers, older adults with long-term services and support needs, health care providers, and other key players in the caregiving community.

The RAISE Act was a significant priority for the National Alliance for Caregiving and continues to be so as we works towards implementation. Please stay tuned as we continue to cover the RAISE Act and its important impact on family caregivers.

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard for the passage of this bill. The RAISE Act will bolster family caregivers in a meaningful way, and its passage is a promising victory as we kick off 2018.

Thank you for posting this info. on the RAISE Act. When/if signed by the President, what impact will the RAISE Act have on our practice as NLCP'ers?
